New Bungalow Developments in Norfolk: Best Property Buy Guaranteed
There is a wide range of properties of all types in Norfolk, but one type of property that is making waves again is the humble bungalow. Indeed, according to developer McCarthy Stone, demand is on the up and according to their research, 70% of over-65s are now considering moving to a bungalow; that’s a 10% increase in the past couple of years. Data from Rightmove backs this up, revealing that the price you’ll pay for a bungalow has increased 11% in 2021; far higher than the national average of 6%.
Why are bungalows so popular?
Forty years ago or so, bungalows were the most popular type of house in the UK. But its popularity waned as builders decided to build up rather than out to maximise land space. Add into the mix the illusion that bungalows were associated with seaside resorts and the older generation; it gives a clearer picture of why their popularity declined.
But over the past few years, demand has increased significantly. With the accommodation being predominantly on one floor, the ground floor, a bungalow is ideal for buyers who either aren’t able to cope with stairs anymore or simply don’t want to.
With the ‘baby boomers’ of the 50s and 60s set to retire in the next ten years and the number of people over the age of 80 is also set to increase – the prediction is from the 3.2 million now to 5 million by 2032 – you can see why the humble bungalow is back on the property map.
But it’s not just the older generation that are demanding one-storey houses. Nicky Morgan, a former cabinet minister, declared a few years ago that developers should be building more ground-level homes for people that have mobility issues.
The younger generation is attracted to the lateral layout of a bungalow, plus the advantage of often being on larger plots with bigger gardens. There’s also much more potential for extensions, upwards and outwards. In fact, the Millennials and Gen Z have transformed bungalows into modern, “architecturally impressive homes with a Mediterranean or LA look and feel to them,” says Associate Director Natasha Selbie from Savills.
