The types of property you can buy in the UK are many and varied – cottages, town houses, apartments, studios, flats, detached, terraced, semi-detached, modern, traditional – the list is endless. But one type of property that was originally associated with the older generation is making waves with younger people; the humble bungalow.

Indeed, there are calls by developer McCarthy Stone that the UK is not building enough bungalows to meet demand following their research last year. This has only pushed up the asking price for bungalows for sale in Norwich. In fact, according to data from Rightmove, the price you’ll pay to buy a bungalow has increased 11% in 2021; far higher than the national average of 6%. So, why are bungalows suddenly so popular again and what do you need to look out for when thinking about buying a bungalow?

Why are bungalows so popular?

Go back 40 years or so and bungalows were the most popular type of house in the UK. But its popularity waned as builders decided to build up rather than out to maximise the land space. Add into the equation that bungalows were associated with seaside resorts and the older generation, it gives you a clear picture as to why their popularity declined. 



However, over the past few years there has been an ever-increasing demand due mostly to the fact that we’re living longer. With the accommodation being predominantly on one floor, the ground floor – there is an exception but we’ll come to that later – it lends itself to buyers who either aren’t able to cope with stairs anymore, or simply don’t want to.

With the baby boomers of the 50s and 60s set to retire in the next 10 years, the number of people over the age of 80 is also set to increase – the prediction is from the current 3.2 million to 5 million by 2032.
